The black-handed spider monkey and other
species of Ateles live in central America.
The animal inhabits wooded regions, mainly
in Guayana and in areas under 25 degrees of
southern latitude. This animal has three
closely related varieties: Ateles paniscus,
Ateles belzebuth and Ateles fuscipes. The surface structure

Description of the fur
----------------------
The body of animal is from 1.2 to 1.4 m long, including the tail which is
1/2nd of the total length. The coat is coarse, and hairs are lustrous, black
and straight. The undercoat is not visible. The guard hairs are from 20 to 34
mm long, about the face and at the neck is a dense and long mane.

Structure of the hair

The microscopic structure of the skin
surface is furrowed. The individual hair
follicles are wide with raised edges. The
average follicle contains only one fibre.
The follicles are relatively widely spaced,
the follicle density and hair cover are

The fine fur fibres are straight, with a
diameter of 10 to 20 µm. The cross-sectional outline is circular or
elliptical and the cuticular scales are of the cornet-like type. The outline
of the scales and the scale surface is smooth. In cross-section the hairs
have no medullary structure.

The intermediate fibres have a diameter
of 25 to 34 µm and their cross-sectional
outline is elliptical. The cuticular scales
are even, tile-like in shape with smooth
surface and rippled scale margins. The
hairs are non-medullated.
The guard hairs are straight, elliptical
